American Martyrs Catholic Church | Thanksgiving Baptism Manhattan Beach Family Photos

Based in El Segundo, I meet people from all of the Beach Cities in the South Bay. This big, loving, personable, fun, close-knit family lives in Manhattan Beach. We met at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Manhattan Beach to celebrate the baptism of a new baby to this wonderful local family. When so many family members get together, I make sure to take some family photos. I’m glad we got the whole group together on the steps. Sounds of children running and laughing and a family greeting each other – hugs and smiles, laughs and giggles and he glee that comes from holding a new family member….what better way to spend Thanksgiving?

The church steps were overflowing with the family as they arrived and talked before the service. The baby, who slept happily in her baptism gown – warm and protected in the arms of her aunt – noticed nothing amiss. To her knowledge, this sounded much like Sunday dinner with the grandparents.

As the kids played and the parents talked I took a few photos outside and tried as best I could to get a peek at the littlest of all. She, with her eyes tightly dreaming, could not have been sweeter to see. I am a proud aunt myself, and this feeling is known well to me:

Once inside I took advantage of the sanctuary’s beautiful light, lovely angles and understated ornate details. What a pretty space to pray, to worship, to join together as a church, to be in the love of God. Even if you aren’t Catholic, and I am not, the beauty of this place is something that brings a deep peace. I enjoyed having a view into what will become the most important day of this little lady’s life, until she marries, if she chooses. From the looks of her, I expect world domination and total rule. She’s amazing.

The ceremony was heartening, the children were allowed to be children and the families were allowed to enjoy the service with a casual formality that fit them perfectly. Monsignor was a delightful character, he delivered the sweetest of prayers for the baby, for her support and for her fortitude in this world – a place of much challenge.

What a Thanksgiving. It filled my heart the whole weekend. This video captures the morning with images and beautiful music by Caity Copley.  Enjoy 🙂

Como Zoo and Conservatory

Some of my favorite locations in the Twin Cities are places you’d take your own family to enjoy scenery or a picnic. I’m not much for alleyways and grit, though I do like photos where that works. Mostly I love color and light to play and behave like the people in the images. The images have to be you.

For those images where a colorful but contemplative background complement the person I’ve got in front of my camera for wedding photos or senior photos I tend to like the Como Zoo and Conservatory. Teal, red, yellow and green – living, growing and exotic things from all corners of the earth are there to enjoy. If you have yet to see the Tea Garden and the Tea House, you really need to make some time to go.

 Edina : Pinstripes

If you are looking for a fun and engaging place that is elegant and offers a wide variety of menu choices for your wedding, cocktail hour or rehearsal dinner I have a wonderful suggestion for you: PINSTRIPES. There is a central location in the Twin Cities in Edina. It is easy to get to from all parts of town and is close to several of the area’s hotels.

The venue is fun and has lots of options: bocce and bowling, hand-crafted drinks and scratch-made dishes.  Edina’s location is 3849 Gallagher Drive Edina, MN 55435 – and here is a MAP for your convenience.

Contact the events team at MN-events@pinstripes.com to discuss your event!

Wirth Chalet

One of my favorite receptions in the last couple of years took place at Wirth Chalet in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Theodore Wirth Chalet Fireplace Room is a lovely venue with a warm feel that can be dressed up with candlelight and softness easily. The arts and crafts feel make the spaces here truly adaptable. The building is very close to parking and is situated in Theodore Wirth Regional Park – here is a MAP .

The Fireplace Room seats 130, tables and chairs are included in your reservation and there’s free WI-FI. The rental for a Friday is $725 and for Saturday it’s $1050 and Sunday is $575 – all fees will be plus tax. For $250 more you can have the ceremony in the same space.

Reserving the Fireplace Room is done by contacting Ellen Kosmoski of the Rentals & Permit team at Minneapolis Parks and Recreation. You can email that office here or call 612-230-6427.

They’ll want you to send a completed Permit Application and you can find that PDF here.

Photos at Wirth Chalet and inside the Fireplace Room are lovely. Make sure your photographer is comfortable with the space and can use or enhance the available lighting there. The sun sets with wonderful colors on the Chalet’s veranda and trees, so photos outside are a nice treat during cocktail hour.

Photographers must obtain a photography permit to work at your reception/ceremony in the Chalet. That permit is usually about $45 per 1.5 hours. For a typical 4 hour reception you should budget $120 for photography fees. For an 8 hour day, expect the fee to be at least $240. Your photographer must carry liability insurance to serve you at any Minneapolis area parks location. Ask your photographer for that proof of insurance.
